At present, there are a total of 823 medical colleges, including private, government, and semi-governmental institutions in India. These colleges collectively offer around 1.29 lakh MBBS seats. However, with approximately 25 lakh candidates appearing for the NTA NEET exam every year and the MBBS seats are not enough to fulfil the demand for medical education.

  • The 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population rule in a state/UT has been deleted.
  • The distance between a medical college and its hospital can now be up to 10 km. For North-Eastern and Himalayan states, the maximum distance allowed is 15 km.
