At present, there are a total of 823 medical colleges, including private, government, and semi-governmental institutions in India. As per the latest data 25 newly established medical colleges are added including 7 Government Medical Colleges and 18 Private Medical Colleges. These colleges collectively offer around 1,36,939 MBBS seats. However, with approximately 25 lakh candidates appearing for the NTA NEET exam every year and the MBBS seats are not enough to fulfil the demand for medical education.

NMC Updates in MBBS Seat Cap and Other Restrictions in New Gazette Notification
As per the latest update, NMC has made several amendments to the medical colleges’ rules, like colleges seeking the limit of 150 MBBS student seats is not deleted, the reforms of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population in that state/U.T is now no more, and the minimum distance between the college and hospital is now changed. - The limit of 150 MBBS seats for medical colleges is removed now.
- The 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population rule in a state/UT has been deleted.
- The distance between a medical college and its hospital can now be up to 10 km. For North-Eastern and Himalayan states, the maximum distance allowed is 15 km.
