Government MBBS Seats in India 2026

There are a total of 456 government medical colleges in India offering MBBS courses, including AIIMS, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical Colleges, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), and Delhi University (DU) colleges. However, there are a total of 21 AIIMS institutes in India, each offering approximately 100 to 110 MBBS seats for undergraduate courses. Candidates aspiring to secure admission to an AIIMS generally need to achieve an All India Rank (AIR) within the top 2,200 (approx.) in the General category. 

On the other hand, to take admission in a government medical college, individuals need to require an AIR between 25,000 and 30,000 for General category candidates, while the cutoff may vary and depends on the state and college.
